In the coming week, listen more carefully to yourself when providing feedback.Are your comments clear enough?Are you specific enough?Have the two of you discussed concrete options?

As you know, effective feedback is about how clear, specific and concrete your team perceives your feedback to be, not how clear, specific and concrete you think your feedback was.

One of the most effective ways to improve your feedback is to ask your salespeople for feedback on your feedback.You can ensure you are being clear, specific and concrete enough by checking in with your team members after you have delivered your feedback.

Inquire about the clarity, specificity and concreteness in your feedback by asking how you did with each on a scale of 1 to 10.Then make inquiries about how you could do even better.You might ask your salespeople feedback questions like:

“Thanks for your feedback that the clarity of my feedback was a 7 out of 10.Much appreciated.What could I have done to be even clearer and perhaps get a 9 out of 10?”

“How clear was the sales skill we were working on for you?”

“How clear was it for you that the skill we were working on would help with your other sales conversations this week?”

“How clear was it for you about what you were going to do differently next time to sell better?”

“How clear was it to you that we focus on our updated sales focus of helping prospects with their buying decisions?”

By asking your salespeople questions like these about the clarity, specificity and concreteness of your feedback, you’ll discover how to improve the quality of your feedback so you can help them sell more.
